Lithium-ion batteries have been used in diverse sectors these days. Lithium-ion batteries can be found in computers, mobile, inverters, cars, and automobiles. As the name suggests, lithium-ion batteries are made up of lithium ions and create an electrical potential between the negative and the positive sides of the battery. A separator, which is made up of insulating material, is used between the two sides of the battery. It is the one that makes the lithium ions pass into the material and it blocks the electrons. Lithium ions move from the negative to the positive side through the separator. The ions begin to move in the opposite direction while the battery charges. This movement of ions leads to the development of electrical potential difference called “voltage.” The increase in demand for inverters is leading to increased lithium-ion battery manufacturers in India.
Inside A Lithium-Ion Battery
Lithium-Ion Cells and BMS
There are multiple lithium-ion cells inside a lithium battery that are wired in parallel and series. Also, some wires are connecting the cells along with a battery management system (BMS) inside a lithium-ion battery. BMS is used to gauge the temperature and health of the battery. BMS balances the energy and helps to ensure that maximum life and performance can be gained.
Electrolyte
Electrolyte present in the lithium-ion battery helps to transport the positive ions between cathode and anode. Mostly, the common electrolyte that is used in a lithium-ion battery is lithium salt.
Separator
A separator is used to separate the anode and cathode in the battery. It is made up of a material sheet allowing lithium ions to pass through but the main attribute is that it doesn’t conduct electricity. It is an important component in a battery because it prevents cathode and anode from shorting together electrically. It is responsible for giving power to the electronic device by making electrons flow through the device.
Along with all these applications, the separator has another important role to play. In case the separator gets extremely hot, then the pores are closed and the separator doesn’t let the lithium ions pass through. Hence, it shuts down the cells of the battery and prevents it from catching fire.
These types of batteries are actively being used in electric vehicles and in India, Haryana is one of the states that is seeing an exponential rise in the number of EV battery manufacturers in Haryana.
